Tucked away in Austria’s UNESCO-designated Salzburger Lungau & Kärntner Nockberge Biosphere Reserve, St Martin Chalets offers a distinctive blend of sustainable design and alpine charm. Founded in 2008 by Herby and Jodi, the holiday village is Austria’s first ethical, energy self-sufficient destination. Built with untreated regional timber and insulated using 100% sheep’s wool, the chalets rely on solar power and regional green energy. Interiors feature reclaimed timber furniture and triple-glazed larch windows, while rainwater irrigation and spring-fed water systems enhance the village’s eco-conscious setup. With no plastic or varnish in sight, the village sets a high standard for environmentally mindful tourism.
Visitors can enjoy year-round outdoor activities such as skiing at Obertauern, hiking along 1,000 km of trails, mountain biking, and guided nature walks with Jodi, an official UNESCO ranger. The Lungau region’s unique climate makes it less susceptible to snow shortages, with ski conditions often lasting into May. In warmer months, cooler temperatures offer a peaceful escape and prime conditions for hiking. Throughout the year, guests can experience local traditions, culinary specialties, and genuine community hospitality. At st martin chalets, tourism supports rather than disrupts, providing a model for quiet, responsible travel in harmony with nature.
