Scandinavian Airlines Opens Reservations for First Commercial Electric Plane Flights

Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) has officially opened reservations for what is being called the first-ever commercial electric plane flights. The 30-seat ES-30 aircraft, developed in partnership with Sweden-based Heart Aerospace, is expected to begin operations in 2028. SAS made all seats available on three inaugural domestic flights in Sweden, Denmark, and Norway. Each seat was priced at approximately $179, a symbolic reference to the airline’s founding year. While the tickets sold out quickly, customers can still register for a waitlist or sign up for future notifications. The flights are part of SAS’s broader plan to make aviation more environmentally friendly and align with Sweden’s goal of achieving net-zero domestic air travel emissions by 2030.

The electric aircraft promises a quieter experience, especially during takeoff and landing, while maintaining standard in-flight service. SAS President and CEO Anko van der Werff  stated, “We’re doing this to manifest our strong belief in the development of electric aircraft as a viable option for more sustainable aviation, and to show our travelers that the future of aviation is closer than many might think, When it comes to the aircraft, we have multiple initiatives underway towards zero-emission flights, and final selection will be done in time for the first electric flight—and beyond.” Although electric flights will likely remain limited to short- and mid-range routes, this step marks a significant development in greener air travel.
