EU Travel Authorisation ETIAS Set to Begin for UK Travellers in Late 2026

The European Union’s European Travel Information and Authorisation System (ETIAS), a visa waiver system for security screening of visa-exempt travellers, is expected to launch in the final quarter of 2026. It will become a requirement for visitors from around 60 visa-exempt countries, including the UK, entering 29 Schengen countries and Cyprus. Etias is not a visa, but a pre-travel authorization for short stays of up to 90 days within any 180 days. It will cost approximately $7.50 for travellers aged 18 to 70. Those under 18 or over 70 will still need to apply, but will not be charged. Etias will be linked to the traveller’s passport and valid for up to three years or until the passport expires.

UK citizens will need to complete a digital application, which will collect basic personal, travel, and background information. Most applications will be approved within minutes, but some may take up to 30 days. Travellers are advised to apply before booking their trip. The Etias will follow the launch of the EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES), scheduled for October 2025, with Etias expected to roll out six months later. A transitional period of at least six months will follow, during which entry will not be denied solely due to a lack of ETIAS, provided other entry conditions are met.
