Chef Matt Molina Opens Cannonball, A New Neighborhood Bistro in South Pasadena

Chef Matt Molina, a James Beard Award recipient, has opened Cannonball, a new American bistro in South Pasadena, alongside operating partner Joe Capella. Located in the former Piccolo space on Mission Street, Cannonball brings approachable yet refined dining to the area, featuring seasonal produce from the local farmers' market. The restaurant offers classic American dishes, such as Molina’s signature biscuits with honey butter and a single-patty burger with Tillamook cheddar, alongside creative starters like celery salad with medjool dates and fideos with clams and chorizo. The menu includes a small selection of mains, with prices designed to remain accessible, and a single dessert, an olive cake with crème fraîche.

Cannonball’s beverage program highlights Capella’s extensive wine expertise, offering a well-curated list of wines priced to encourage frequent enjoyment. Glasses range from $14 to $17, with bottles often listed below online retail prices. Cocktails, developed with input from Eric Alperin and led by bartender Wolfgang Alexander, provide thoughtful twists on familiar classics. Designed by Fettle Design, the interior blends vintage charm with a darker, East Coast-inspired aesthetic, while the patio offers a brighter al fresco setting. With its balanced menu, thoughtful pricing, and welcoming ambiance, Cannonball adds new energy to South Pasadena’s dining landscape.
