Nestlé Backs Brazil Reforestation Project with Re.Green and Barry Callebaut

Nestlé has announced two major reforestation initiatives in Brazil in partnership with re.green and Barry Callebaut, aimed at restoring ecosystems critical to cocoa and coffee production. These efforts are part of Nestlé’s broader commitment to reach net zero by 2050 and plant 200 million trees by 2030. Combined, the two projects will plant 11 million trees across 8,000 hectares (19,768 acres). The partnership with Brazil-based re.green will see the planting of 3.3 million native trees in Bahia’s coastal Atlantic rainforest. Nestlé will fully fund this 30-year initiative, which is expected to generate 880,000 carbon credits. The announcement follows re.green’s expanded agreement with Microsoft in early 2025 to restore 33,000 hectares of Amazon and Atlantic Forest land.

In a second collaboration, Nestlé will co-invest with chocolatier Barry Callebaut to restore 6,000 hectares in Bahia and Para, with 60% of project funding coming from Nestlé. The land will largely be converted into cocoa agroforestry systems, promoting both environmental and agricultural benefits. Barbara Sapunar, Nestlé Brasil’s Director of Business Transformation and ESG, highlighted that in addition to helping the company meet its decarbonization goals, the projects will help restore key sourcing regions and strengthen the resilience of its supply chains.
